Glasgow Accies v GHK Match Report

The omens were good: GHK folk had won the Lions share of the raffle prizes at the pre-match lunch; the GHK Minis had edged the curtain raiser; and GHK could boast the only team member to have played in the last league match between the clubs some fifteen years earlier in Gerry Hawkes.

GHK duly started the game as if aware that destiny was on their side as they played a first half of real intensity. Accurate execution in attack, resolution and aggression in defence and sound decision-making in all aspects leading eventually to a hard fought but thoroughly well-merited bonus point win at the home of their nearest neighbours and longest standing rivals.

As early as the first minute GHK went close when Tony Herron, who was to be a danger throughout, cut through only to be pulled back, correctly, for a marginally forward pass.

GHK's first score was not long delayed when, following a scrum from a squint Accies lineout, Mike Borthwick picked up at No8, fed Mike Aird who drew his man and put Rory Love into space from where Rory's pace put him into the corner. A simple but well executed move.

Both sides exerted periods of pressure but it was GHK who looked more dangerous and, mid way through the half, following good pressure, GHK struck twice: first when Andy Fleming had the vision and pace to exploit a hole in the defence for 10-0; and then, after another good break from Tony Herron, continued by Rory Love, the ball bounced over the Accies line with the ever present Hugh Parker first to the touch down. Converted by Andy Fleming for 17-0.

With both sides endeavouring to keep the ball alive the game continued at a great pace but with no further score until half time.

The pace of the game dropped somewhat in the second half, perhaps not surprisingly, and Accies came more into the game as their forwards built some momentum, almost scoring from a break by their nippy scrum half which was only foiled by a great cover tackle from Hugh Parker. An Accies try was only slightly delayed though as they picked and drove a few times to bring the score back to 7-17.

This was Accies best spell and they missed a penalty which would have brought them to within a single score.

The match, and bonus point, clinching try came just after the mid point of the half when a decent, but innocuous looking clearance kick was well chased by GHK debutant Scott Eadie who collected it on halfway, beat two defenders and just about made it to the line to the relief of the large 'travelling' support.

Accies continued to battle to get back into the game gaining some reward with a score in the final minute of the game to produce a final score of Accies 14 GHK 24.

The level of effort, concentration and intensity achieved in the first half by GHK was decisive in this game. There is no doubt that Accies are a good side who will win many of their games in this league.

GHK's great start to this game and the league sees them top of the table by four points, having played the teams in 3rd, 4th and 5th positions. An excellent start but, as has been said before, this is a league in which just about every team is capable of producing match winning performances, particularly if they are playing the league leaders. No room for complacency but three very positive performance on which to build.

Congratulations to all involved, particularly Scott Eadie for his try scoring debut and GHK man of the match Andy Drummond, who combined his usual good game in the tight with some excellent tackles and ball carrying in the loose.

A final word of thanks to all at Glasgow Accies for the organisation and hospitality that went into Saturday which made the day into a celebration of all that is good about club rugby. I'm sure everyone who was present will want to be present for the return match and David Gilmore Trophy match on Saturday 26 November at Old Anniesland
