Junior Rugby

Welcome to the GHK Mini Rugby Section.

We are an open club actively seeking to recruit boys and girls in years Primary 3 to Primary 7 from all local schools.  We meet on Sunday afternoons at Old Anniesland (Anniesland Cross) where we are privileged to have the use of some excellent playing facilities and an impressive clubhouse.  We play regular home and away matches as well as taking part in several tournaments throughout the season.  As a club we aim to be friendly and welcoming.  Various events are organised throughout the season specifically to include parents and friends of the mini rugby section.

In the text that follows, we have tried to answer most of the questions you might have.  Please feel free to contact us if you are interested in joining or if there is anything else you would like to know.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the minimum age?

Whilst our youngest year group is P3, there’s no strict minimum age - it depends on the maturity of the individual player.  We are happy to have P2's join in with the P3's if they are keen to do so.

Where do you train/meet?

Old Anniesland is at Anniesland Cross, on the corner of Crow Road and Anniesland Road. It is part of The High School of Glasgow Senior School and home to Glasgow Hawks rugby club.  Access for vehicles is off Anniesland Road.

What are the times for training / matches?

For training days, we ask everyone to meet at Old Anniesland at 12:00 noon in order to be ready for starting at 12:15pm.  Officially we finish at 1:45pm but tidying away equipment and walking back over to the clubhouse may take until 2:00pm.

Times may vary for away games but, depending on where we are going, we generally ask players to meet at Old Anniesland at 12:00 noon or meet us at the match grounds by 12:30pm.

What do the players need to wear?

Any suitable kit may be worn on training days but for playing in matches and tournaments players should have the proper team strip which needs to be purchased through the club.  Other items you will need to get, are:

§          A mouth-guard (gumshield). This is essential – players will not be allowed to join in games or contact sessions without one.

§          Rugby boots. (Football boots are OK)

We would emphasise that it can be very cold on Sundays through the winter, particularly on match days when players may have to wait on the sideline.  Players should be encouraged to have extra layers to put on  (e.g. tracksuit, vest, sweatshirt, wooly hat).

What does it cost?

The annual subscription for season 2007/08 is £45.  (Cheques payable to "GHK Mini Rugby")

All youngsters are welcome to come along the first time on a 'Have-a-Go' basis although everyone needs to register for insurance purposes.

Who does the coaching?

The coaches are all volunteers - generally parents of our young players who are former rugby players themselves.

Our coaches have attended basic SRU coaching courses and the majority have also completed a basic refereeing course specifically for mini rugby.

Can parents come and spectate?

We encourage support from parents, grandparents, friends and siblings, especially for the younger age groups.  Please feel free to come out and watch the training sessions and support our teams in matches and tournaments.

If the weather is bad, how do we find out if rugby is cancelled?

Rugby is a winter sport so we will normally try not to cancel sessions unless the pitches are unplayable.  You will have the phone number and email address of your team coach so that you can contact them, but our 'webmaster' will endeavour to post a notice on the GHK website as soon as there is any change to planned arrangements.  An email will normally be circulated too.
